This vinyl fence installation closes in a back yard and side yard in Winter Park. White privacy panels run along the lot line, turn a corner at the house, and end at a double gate on the side. Big shade trees stand on both sides of the property, so the fence had to fit in between them instead of clearing them out. The back lawn is open and flat, which keeps the long run easy on the eye.

Straightline Fence has been building fences in Central Florida since 2012, with our own crews, and we pull the permit. We also check what your city and HOA require for height, color and gate placement before we quote. Call (407) 593-1888 and we will walk your lot and look at the trees with you.

Working around trees

Can you put a vinyl fence next to mature trees?

Yes, as long as the posts miss the roots. Where a trunk sits close, the spacing moves instead of the tree.

Look at the side run in the photo. Branches hang over the fence line, and a strip of bare soil follows the base of the panels. A post hole dug through a big root can hurt the tree and leave the post loose, so near a root flare the hole gets dug by hand. Panels come in set widths. We shift a post a foot or two to clear the roots and let the last panel on the run take up the difference.

The line still reads as straight from the yard. The tree keeps its footing. Ask about roots at the estimate, and point out any tree you want to keep. Our vinyl fence installation page explains how the posts and panels lock together.

Shade and upkeep

Does white vinyl get dirty under trees?

It can pick up a green film in the shade. It wipes off.

Shade keeps vinyl damp longer after rain and morning dew, and damp is where algae starts. Under trees like these you may see a light green film on the lower panels after a wet summer. A garden hose and a soft brush clear it, and so does mild soap and water. There is no paint, no stain and no sealer to keep up. Pollen and leaf litter rinse off the same way.

The vinyl we install is made in the U.S. with a UV inhibitor, so the white holds up in the parts of this yard that do get full sun. If you are weighing white against tan or grey, we stock all three at our St. Cloud showroom, and you can hold a real panel before you choose. To get started, schedule a free estimate.

The gate

How wide should a side yard gate be?

Wide enough for a mower, with room to spare. A double gate does that.

The gate on this project is a double gate: two leaves that meet in the middle on black hinges, set in the side yard next to the house. Open both and you get a clear opening for a mower, a wheelbarrow or a load of mulch. Open one and you still have a normal walk through. The latch sits where the two leaves meet, so the gate closes square and stays shut.

A single walk gate around three to four feet wide is fine if only people use it. If you plan to move equipment through, ask for a double. It costs more, and it saves you from hauling everything the long way around the house. Tell us what has to fit through the opening and we will size it before the posts go in. Call (407) 593-1888.
