This white vinyl fence installation encloses a back yard in one of the newer Winter Garden subdivisions, where the houses sit close on every side. The side yards are only a few strides wide. The back run faces a row of two story homes. Near the AC unit, a short two panel section screens the condenser from view, with a walk gate just past it. With neighbors this close, privacy was the point. The back run blocks the view at ground level, though second story windows will always see over a fence.

Tight lots like this are routine for our crews. Straightline Fence has been building fences in and around Winter Garden since 2012, with the vinyl coming off our own shelves in St. Cloud. Call (407) 593-1888 to book a visit.

Tight spaces

How do you install a fence in a narrow side yard?

Mostly by hand. The auger, the concrete and every panel get carried in rather than driven in.

There is no room for equipment between these houses. The crew carries panels in one at a time, mixes concrete in a wheelbarrow, and digs some holes by hand where a machine will not fit. It is slower than an open lot, and it is the only way to do it without scuffing the stucco or rutting the sod.

Side yards like this are also crowded with things you do not want to hit. Look at the photos. There are downspouts with drain pipes, an irrigation valve box, and an AC line, all within a few feet of the fence. The crew sets each post to miss them and keeps the bottom rail clear of the downspout outlets so water still drains away from the house. Our fence company in Winter Garden page covers how lots on different sides of town change the job.

The AC screen

Can a fence hide the AC unit?

Yes, with a short screen. It just has to leave room for the technician.

Here a two panel section of white vinyl stands in front of the condenser, so you see clean fence from the yard instead of a metal box. It stops short of the unit on every side. Air has to move through the coil, and a technician has to reach the panel on service day. A screen set tight against an AC unit makes it run harder and turns every repair into a fight.

See the orange flag in the grass? That is a utility locate mark. Before any digging, Sunshine 811 sends crews to mark buried lines, and Florida law gives them two full business days to do it. Orange marks communication lines like cable and fiber, which often run right down a side yard. The crew sets posts around those marks, never on top of them. Our vinyl fence installation page shows the panel styles we use for screens like this.

Permits

Do you need a permit for a backyard fence in Winter Garden?

Often not from the city, for a residential fence six feet or under. Your HOA is another story.

The City of Winter Garden exempts most residential fences six feet and under from a building permit, which surprises a lot of people. Some addresses near the edge of town fall under Orange County instead, and the county runs its own rules, so we check which applies before we quote.

In a subdivision like this one, the HOA is usually the real hurdle. Many associations set the height, the color and the panel style, and some want to see a plot plan before they approve. Get that approval first. A fence the HOA rejects has to come down at your cost, and on a lot this tight there is no room to fudge the line. A yard like this usually takes two days on site, posts the first day and panels once the concrete sets. To get a number on yours, schedule a free estimate or call (407) 593-1888.
