This aluminum fence installation in Winter Garden runs across a yard that falls away from the house, under a canopy of big oaks, with a neighbor's wood privacy fence along the back. We stepped the panels down the grade instead of forcing one straight line across it. Each section sits level on its own, and the posts take up the change in height between them. From the street it reads as a tidy staircase. From the yard it just looks like a fence that belongs there.

Slopes are where fence jobs usually go wrong, because the problem is easy to underestimate from the driveway. Handling the grade

Should an aluminum fence step or rack on a slope?

It depends on how steep the run is. Aluminum can do either, and on a drop like this one stepping is the cleaner answer.

Racking tilts the rails so a panel follows the ground like a ramp, while the pickets stay plumb. That works well on a gentle grade. Every rackable panel has a limit, though, and past it the panel either gaps at the bottom or stops looking right. Stepping keeps every panel level and lets the posts do the climbing. The tradeoff is a small triangle of open space under the downhill end of each section. For most dogs it does not matter. For a small breed, or anywhere a pool barrier is involved, we plan for it before install day.

How do crews keep a stepped fence straight?

With a string line pulled tight along the run, measured step heights, and a lot of checking with a level.

You can see the line in this photo, running low along the panels while the crew sets the next section. It keeps every post on the same line and every step at the same height, so the top of the fence climbs in even increments instead of wandering. Posts go into concrete at two to three feet.

The oaks made this yard slower than it looks. Winter Garden has a lot of old tree canopy, especially on the established streets around downtown and Plant Street, and big oaks put roots right where a post wants to go. An auger that hits a thick root either stalls or tears it, so near the trees the crew digs by hand and nudges the post spacing to miss the worst of them.

The neighbor's wood fence behind this one raised a different question. An old fence is not proof of where the property line is, so we confirm the line first rather than assuming it.

Do you need a permit for a fence in Winter Garden?

Usually yes, and if the home is in an HOA you need that approval as well.

The first question is jurisdiction. Some addresses near the edge of town fall under Orange County rather than the City of Winter Garden, and the two handle permits separately, so we confirm which one applies before we quote.
